The Yanomami Tribe- Group 8: The Effects of Globalization

Background Information

The indigenous group of people called the Yanomami (also spelled as Yanomamo or Yanomama) are live in scattered villages throughout the Amazon Rainforest between Brazil and Venezuela. The group consist of about 35,000 people and is the largest isolated tribe in the Amazon. They consider themselves to be connected through their politically autonomous villages. Factors like culture, marriage, kinship, and war connect the villages together with no distinct “chief”. Instead, each village is led by a “headman” that helps guide people in the right direction. The people live under a common roof is called “shabono” that is characterized by its oval shape and large size. The Yanomami are well-known for their hunting skills as well as their abilities to gather fruit, fish, and grow bananas. It only takes about four hours for the Yanomami to satisfy all their material needs and leaves the rest of the day for relaxation. The Yanomami believe that the spirit world is essential to life and that every creature, rock, tree, and mountain has a spirit.

Vision

The iCross-Cultural Citizen Project’s vision is to create an online cross-cultural space for students, professionals, and youth to learn and exchange cross-culturally sensitive information about contemporary indigenous experiences. From that outsider student’s perspective, we will try to theoretically explore possible collaborative solutions to problems that affect the indigenous populations of our planet. Finally, we hope for the future creation of a space where indigenous youth can share their experiences and their realities with us for real mutual collaboration to take place.
